# Alt text on autopilot.

Serpwise crawls every page, finds every image without alt text, and writes a caption with an AI vision model that actually looks at the picture - grounded in your page, in your language. Then it serves the alt attribute from the edge. No CMS fields, no plugins, no code changes.

01 · Why it matters

## Every undescribed image is a missed reader.

Accessibility is no longer optional

Screen readers depend on alt text, and rules like the European Accessibility Act now hold commercial sites to it. Most sites ship hundreds of images with none.

Image search is real traffic

Google Images ranks what it can read. Descriptive alt text is the single most direct signal you control - and the most commonly missing one.

AI reads your pages too

Assistants and AI crawlers can't see your pictures. Alt text is how your images exist at all in an answer from ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity.

02 · How it works

## From missing to live in four steps.

The whole loop runs inside one Images workspace - from inventory to a caption served at the edge.

01

We inventory every image

The crawler finds every image on every page - current alt text, dimensions, duplicates. Icons and SVGs are sorted out as decorative.

02

AI captions that can see

A vision model looks at the actual pixels, grounded in the page's title, headings, and product data - and writes in your site's language.

03

You stay in control

Approve, edit, or reject in a before/after review queue - or let Autopilot publish high-confidence captions for you.

04

Live at the edge

The gateway serves the alt attribute in your HTML in-flight. No CMS work, no theme edits, no deploys - and your origin stays untouched.

1 credit per image - about a tenth of a cent. Duplicate images share one caption and are charged once. Auditing existing alt text costs 8 credits per image.

03 · Caption quality

## Captions that actually see the image.

Most alt-text tools guess from the filename. Serpwise sends the image itself to a vision model and grounds the caption in the page it lives on - so the result reads like a human wrote it for that exact spot.

Grounded, not generic

- Reads the actual image - not just the filename
- Page title, URL, and headings woven into the prompt
- Product pages pull enriched catalog data automatically
- Written in your site's language - Danish pages get Danish alt text
- Filler openers like “image of …” are banned outright

Accessibility done right

- Length capped to the ~125-character screen-reader convention
- Decorative images get an empty alt - the correct answer, not a fake one
- SVG icons and logos are excluded, and never charged
- Keyword include/exclude guardrails prevent stuffing
- Existing good alt text is never touched

Every caption gets a quality score before you ever see it - and you can audit the alt text you already have, scored 0-100 by the same vision model.

04 · Your rules

## Your brand voice. Your call. Every caption.

Per-domain settings shape how every caption is written, and nothing goes live without passing your bar - whether that bar is a human review or a confidence threshold you set.

Per-domain style settings

Purpose (descriptive, SEO, product, accessibility-first), tone, length limits, brand mentions, prefix/suffix, keyword guardrails, and free-form custom instructions.

Before/after review

A side-by-side queue shows the old and new caption for every image. Approve, click-to-edit, or reject - even live captions can be edited in place.

Audit what you already have

The vision model scores your existing alt text 0-100 and drafts better replacements for the weak ones - straight into the same review queue.

A full activity log

Every generation, audit, and publish is logged with its outcome and credit cost - manual and autopilot spend split out.

05 · Autopilot

## Set it once. Never ship an undescribed image again.

1 Detect

Every crawl, watched

New images without alt text - and old captions that score poorly - are flagged automatically on every crawl.

2 Caption

Generated on schedule

Autopilot writes captions on the cadence you choose. Duplicate images share one caption and are only charged once.

3 Publish

Live - or queued for you

Captions above your confidence bar go live automatically; everything else waits in the review queue. Every action is logged.

06 · Beyond alt text

## The same workspace watches image health.

Alt text is the headline, but the Images workspace audits the rest of your image hygiene too - and fixes what it can in the HTML, at the edge.

Broken images

Images that no longer resolve are flagged before your visitors find them.

Oversized files

Heavy images and legacy formats surfaced with the potential savings, page by page.

Lazy loading & priority

Below-the-fold images get lazy loading; your LCP image gets fetch priority - applied in HTML.

Missing dimensions

Width and height attributes added so your layout stops shifting while images load.

FAQ

## Questions, answered.

01 Why does alt text matter so much? + -

Three audiences read it: screen-reader users, for whom it is the image; search engines, which rank images by it; and AI assistants, which can only cite what they can read. Accessibility rules like the European Accessibility Act now make it a requirement for commercial sites, not a nice-to-have.

02 Will it overwrite the alt text I already have? + -

No. Generation targets images with missing or generic alt text, and the edge only ever serves captions you (or your Autopilot rules) have published. Existing good alt text is never modified. If you want a second opinion on it, the audit scores it 0-100 and drafts replacements only for the weak ones - into your review queue, not onto your site.

03 What language are the captions in? + -

Your site's language, pinned per domain - a Danish shop gets Danish alt text, not translated English. Tone, length, brand mentions, and keyword guardrails are configurable per domain too.

04 What does it cost? + -

1 credit per generated caption - roughly a tenth of a cent per image. Duplicate images across your site share one caption and are charged once. Auditing existing alt text costs 8 credits per image. SVGs and decorative images are never charged.

05 Do I need to change my website? + -

No. The alt attribute is injected into your HTML at the edge as the page is served - including Next.js server-component payloads. No CMS fields to fill, no plugin, no deploy. Turn Serpwise off and your origin serves exactly what it always did.

06 What about purely decorative images? + -

They get an empty alt attribute - which is the correct accessibility outcome, so screen readers skip them instead of reading a filename aloud. SVG icons and logos are classified separately and excluded from generation entirely.
